South Goddess – Salonshai (sah-lohn-shy) - the Priestess for the Aquarian Age, associated with fiery pillars and sacred prostitution. The Light-Bringer of the Southeast [Atamenoch] is Her Lord.  She is the fire lit from the bone, fire and blood. She is the Phoenix, the Eye, the peace of the Light-Bringer. Her manner is bright and forceful.

I had another plan for this week, but it didn't turn out like I hoped. So instead, I'm going to share a collection of artwork amd icons I've aquired that represent some of the Gods of Sorgae.

Image-heavy under the cut )
Goddess of the Rim – Melusine (mel-you-SEEN-ah) - The Task-Giver. She is straightforward and speaks often of the things we must do.

I knew very little about Melusine going into this post. So, as usual, I Googled.

Southwest Goddess – Morga (more-gah) – She is the leader of the Maenads who hunt their own God and tear Him to pieces to drink His blood. She is sharp and fierce and revels in all that is ecstatic in nature.

Kur

West God – Kur (koor) - identified with swords, magick, and the Underworld.  He is the Lord of Shadows, the Horned Lord of Death, and the Hounds (the Keriosak, the Beings of Daring in the West) belong to Him. His placement in the West aligns Him with Water, and therefore Emotion and Daring. He is leader on the Wild Hunt.

In closing, I'd like to share a couple songs. One, my High Priestess wrote, and the other, by the Austrailian duo, Savage Garden. After the latter, I have a few notes.

Remember that the Muse is also in the West )

Northwest Goddess – Hekate (heh-KAH-tay) –She deals with the mechanics of magick and spellwork. Hers is the physical craft of the Art Magickal.  She is far older than and became the Celtic/Greco Hecate.

This Goddess is sometimes thought of as a Queen of the Witches because of Her associations with Magick. She is also associated with Crossroads and hounds.

Hermes is the new South God. Not much at all is known about His relationship and function in Sorgae yet, as His inclusion in the pantheon has just begun. So In an effort to gain insight, I turned to Astrology, researching the planet Mercury (Hermes' Roman name), the Zodiac sign of Aquarius (since this is the Aquarian Age), and what Mercury in Aquarius means.

I am the majesty that is thine
I am that which is greater than all things
I am that which runs beyond the secret seas
Thus is how my entry must begin

High Goddess – Ghiana (guy-AH-nah) - She is the ‘over-arching’ Goddess. We associate Her with the old primordial Goddesses such as Ki (Sumerian) and Gaia (Greek).

But Ghiana is more than simply our Earth. She is one half of the First Division, the counterpart to Iove. She is the Life that springs forth, the growing, the result of the Will of Creation. She represents Time, Silence, Knowledge, and Bounty.

Southeast Goddess - Gwenhevar (GWEN-heh-vahr) – She is the “White Raven,” the “White Hind,” the “White Swan,” (though She is "burnt black for love of [us]," for nothing can blaze bright white without scorching). She is the guide between Faerie and our world, the gentle teacher of the True Quest. Her Elemental association is the Spark, where Air leads to Fire, the initial idea that leads to Will and drive and action.

Mythologically, we associate Gwenhevar with the Aruthurian Guinevere (though the original Welsh spelling of her name is "Gwenhwyfar," and means essentially "white enchantress"). It is thought by many that Guinevere betrayed her king-husband by having an affair with his knight, Lancelot. However, it is only because of this seeming "betrayal" that Arthur is able to realize potential and claim his full power as the Sacred King. In this way, Guinevere is a very similar figure to another Welsh Goddess, Blodeuwedd. There are also stories of Guinevere being abducted, which relates her to another descent Goddess, Persephone. In these ways do we name our Gwenhevar as a teacher and revealer of Divine Truth, who does so through the power of Her Love.

Northwest God – Goh’len (goh-[glottal stop]-lehn) - The God in the Northwest is represented by a golem or humniculum, the idea of a form that has yet to have life breathed into it. He represents the inherent ‘aliveness’ that is in all things, even inanimate things, the ‘life’ that exists in the realm of the Dead. (See also the old definition of fiction.) His Element is Clay, the combination of Water and Earth, which represents the Form that Magick can and will take.

It is no accident or mistake that His name is similar to the Hebrew word "golem," for a golem was a clay statue created by a magician, which would be brought to life through Magick (often using a specific word or phrase, writing it either on the golem's forehead, or on a slip a paper put in its mouth). Early in the Biblical book of Genesis, in fact, Adam was called a golem, because he was at first a "body without a soul." This is in fact the only Biblical use of the word "golem." It seems significant that, under this Abrahamic Tradition's definition, the creation of world's first human paved the way for other humans to learn the art of Magickal life-giving, and so have a portion of the power enjoyed by this Tradition's God. Especially when we consider that it was in fact gaining this Knowledge that led to man's downfall later in the same creation story; the fruit that Adam and Eve ate, was from the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil, sacred Knowledge that their God said belonged only to Him, and so, because they now knew what He did, He cast them out. And yet, Adam was made from this power, and his "descendents" have since learned to give a soul to their own creations, both figuratively, and literally. Goh'len is our tie to that power and ability, the manifestation of our works, the Divine thread in our Magick.

Erian

"East Goddess – Erian (air-ee-AN), identified with the broom and the veil and the stars.  She is the initiator, the revealer of the Mysteries. Her knowledge is transformative.  She seems to have a special connection to the Faerie, the Hurralya (Beings of Air in the East [more on them in a later post]) and we have identified Her as the mythical Queen of Elphame."

Also years ago, my High Priestess wrote a song that included some applicable lyrics:

Stars on high and stars beneath
Dust among the realms of night
Cold Her song with voices still
Hidden ever from thy sight
Hidden from thy sight

[...]
Hosts of Air about Her whirl
Not of faith but knowledge She
Vault of Heaven, vault of Hell
In Her is the Mystery
She, the Mystery

I have met Erian once that I was aware of. She speaks with an accent similar to Arduina's, as They both speak Vaska. (In fact, when both were Channeled at the same time, They spoke Vaska to each other.) What I remember most about Erian is that She seemed glad to be with us. She also commented on the absence of certain tools, saying She liked the "frippery," that ritual pomp and pagentry and props were pleasing to Her.

I did some brief online research about the designation "Queen of Elphame," and one aspect that struck me was that She is said to "kidnap" humans. This is pretty standard Faerie lore, but a bit of possible UPG (Unverified Personal Gnosis) says that these "kidnappings" are more accurately Initiations, that those taken are given knowledge of the Mystery She keeps. Often times such knowledge is so transformative that one simply cannot abide returning to one's previous life. So one travels elsewhere, by physical or astral means, to explore and Know and commune.

Come away, O Human child
To the woods and waters wild
With a Faerie, hand in hand
For the world's more full of weeping
Than you can understand

He comes, the Human child
To the woods and waters wild
With a Faerie, hand in hand
For the world's more full of weeping
Than he can understand

(from "The Stolen Child" by William Butler Yeats)

Dionysus

Feb. 14th, 2013 07:04 pm
This week's entry is about the God in the Southwest.

"Dionysus (dee-oh-nee-sus) – He is the God of passion, ecstasy, and drunken revels, of connections and sexuality and all forms of pleasure. He is sensual with all – male and female."

He is also the willing sacrifice of and King to the Maenads, and associated with Steam (the mixing of Fire and Water).

He's one of the Gods I haven't had much experience with, nor is He one of "my" Gods. I know plenty about the Greek stories, but again, I haven't had direct experience with His Sorgae manifestation. However, as someone who identifies as bisexual, having a pantheon which includes a God with a similar orientation is comforting and affirming.

As an aside, my High Priestess has been creating digital art of the Sorgae Gods, with help and input from the Coven as a whole. So under the cut is her rendering of the way Dionysus appears to us.

A Topics

Administrative note: I've devised a system and a plan for posting since last week, which will start when we hit B next week. But this entry is a "slush pile," all the other A topics I want to speak about. Also, I had meant to explain that I'll be using this Project to talk about Sorgae, the branch of religious Witchcraft I'm studying.

First is this journal's main title, Aranakh. This is a Vaska word, which essentially means, "to not forget," which is different than just remembering. I understand the distinction thusly; I can remember that I am supposed to shower regularly, and I remember the experience of showering in the past. But "to not forget" showering means that I actually do shower when I am supposed to. So, applied to this 'Craft, we can remember the ways of the past, both our own and stretching into antiquity. But this concept of Aranakh compells us to actively live Sorgae, to practice it and honor these Gods.

Arduina

Jan. 3rd, 2013 08:01 am
Appropriately, my first PBP post is about the Goddess who first made contact. Here is the "official" blurb for Her:

"North Goddess – Arduina (ard-WEEN-a) - identified with pentacles and the Altar and the now-extinct cave bear, Ursus Spelaeus. She claims to be from Old Europe, from the Ardennes, whose center is “Duna” - the Danube River. She speaks using the pre-Roman names for various areas and countries, in a language She calls Vaska."

Arduina is one of "my" Goddesses, as I was told I was associated with West, Northwest, and North (more on that in another post). But even before this, before I knew anything about Sorgae, for years I had an enormous She-Bear visit me in meditations. I called Her "Grandmother." Now I realize that it was likely Arduina.

I've met Arduina (via Channeling) a few times in ritual. She is warm and welcoming, and always glad to visit with we Witches. Though She always wants more infa, more babies. One of Her symbols is a pentacle, and rivers to Her are very important. Being the North Goddess, Her Element is Earth.
